The “Cyprus Institute for Rural and Regional Development” is a newly founded institution based in Cyprus, aiming at providing information and promoting social dialogue with respect to issues related to rural and regional development. One of the first activities of the “Cyprus Institute for Rural and Regional Development” is the launching of the “Cyprus Yearbook of Rural Development”. The primary objective of this initiative is to contribute to the understanding of the challenges and the opportunities of rural development policy, as well as to set forth ideas for the way forward. “The Cyprus Yearbook of Rural Development” aims at eurocrats, civil servants, scholars and the general public. This volume is divided into two sections. The first section consists of five articles, dealing with issues relevant to the EU Rural Development Policy and issues pertinent to the CAP in general. This section brings together different perspectives and analyses by authors coming from key Institutions like the European Commission, the Portuguese Presidency, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Member States. The second section is composed by nine summaries of MS National Strategy Plans for Rural Development for the period 2007-2013. These contributions have been prepared and formally submitted by the various MS authorities who are responsible for the preparation of the National Strategy Plans.
